This is an original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. The text consists of 15 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown ink in gothic textura script on animal vellum. The leaf has an intricate panel border of vines and flowers in gold, blue, green and red. This Rinceaux border is in the style of the Boucicaut Master Ateiler. This leaf continues one of the most popular prayers of the Middle Ages Obsecro Te: Et per illud?” (and through that divine mystery that was then worked by the Holy Spirit, and through the holy unutterable piety, grace, mercy, love, and humility through which your son descended to accept human flesh in your most venerable womb and which he saw in you when he commended you to St. John the apostle and Evangelist and when he exalted you over the angels and archangels; and through that holy inestimable humility in which you responded to the archangel Gabriel?)Book of Hours are personal prayer books of a devout and status-conscious society and are not only works of art, but cultural documents of the their time. They reveal a unique combination of sacred and secular imagery – made of the finest materials, by the best craftsmen, for a small audience, which could both appreciate and afford them. This leaf is encased within a double sided mat within a sealed plastic envelope.
