The Plan du Port des Français (1786) is a rare and historically significant map documenting the French exploration of the Pacific Northwest coast, specifically Lituya Bay in present-day Alaska. It was created during the expedition of Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse, a prominent French naval officer, and was published posthumously in 1797 as part of Voyage de La Pérouse autour du Monde. The map offers a detailed hydrographic survey of the bay, including soundings, coastal contours, anchorages, and navigational notes. It marks the site of a tragic incident in which two boats from La Pérouse’s crew capsized, resulting in the deaths of 21 men—a loss noted in some versions of the map. Stylistically, the map reflects the scientific precision of Enlightenment-era French cartography, with fine engraving and emphasis on accuracy. As one of the earliest European maps of the Alaskan coast, it stands as both a valuable navigational record and a testament to the ambitions and risks of 18th-century exploration.
