At first glance this French map may appear to be a slight aimed at the British presence in the new world (“Possessions Angl””), but in actually it was just a convention used at the time when abbreviating. Made by the the Royal Cartographer, Robert de Vaugondy, this colonial era map shows us the best of known information, and some fascinating speculation. With bold hand color we distinctly see the arrangement of the European territories throughout North America, with French possessions covering the heart and majority of the continent. Stretching from the Labrador coast to the southern US and central plains, this map illustrates the importance of French settlement, as well as the importance of the Louisiane territory later in history. Numerous Indian tribes are located on the map, including an early notation for the Kansas, here noted as “Canses”. The additional inset shows the current speculations of the time as to what the lay to the west. The giant Sea of the West spans across the area and gives way to several rivers in what is present day Canada. This is a fascinating and attractive map, in very good condition.
