The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was a British philanthropical group that sought to help educate the British public. They published a number of different books and atlases, and were at one point subsidized by the British Parliament on one of their endeavors. Know for simplicity and accuracy, the S.D.U.K. published some wonderful maps of the developing nations, including this one of North America. This map was current to the time, and shows us some of the major changes that occurred as the nation was evolving. Here we see the expanded western territory as it reaches to the west coast, as well as the short-lived independent Republic of Texas. The majority of the southwest is still a Mexican possession at this time, and reaches up to the northern border of California and east to the continental divide. Rare territorial boundaries are shown for Wisconsin and Iowa, which were just recently devised. Condition of this rare map is very good with slight toning around the edges of the sheet, but otherwise it’s quite clean. Hand color is skillfully applied.
