The Nova Belgica et Anglia Nova is a notable 17th-century map by Dutch cartographer Jan Jansson, first published around 1647. It offers a detailed depiction of the northeastern coast of North America, encompassing regions from Nova Scotia to Cape Lookout, including present-day New England, New York, and parts of the Mid-Atlantic.

Building upon earlier works, Jansson’s map incorporates advancements from Johannes de Laet’s 1630 map and Hessel Gerritsz’s cartography, providing a more accurate depiction of coastal features such as the Hudson River (Noorde Rivier), Delaware River (Zuydt Rivier), and the depiction of New Amsterdam (modern-day New York City). While coastal areas are rendered with improved precision, the interior regions still reflect speculative geography, including the depiction of large, mythical inland lakes, a common feature in maps of that era.

The map vividly illustrates the competing colonial claims of European powers. It features the Dutch coat of arms prominently, symbolizing the territorial ambitions of the Netherlands in the New World. Notably, the map references the Dutch colony of New Netherland and English settlements in New England, highlighting the geopolitical tensions and conflicts among European powers vying for control in North America.

In line with the Dutch cartographic tradition of the Golden Age, the map is richly decorated. It features an elaborate cartouche flanked by Native American figures, compass roses, sailing ships, and illustrations of local fauna such as beavers and otters. These artistic embellishments not only enhance the visual appeal but also reflect the European fascination with the New World and its inhabitants.

This map was included in various editions of Jansson’s atlases, such as the Atlas Novus. Its detailed depiction of the northeastern coast influenced subsequent cartographers and remained a reference point for decades. The map’s enduring appeal lies in its combination of geographical detail, historical context, and artistic craftsmanship.
