This nautical 1779 chart by Des Barres shows the New York Harbor around Staten and Long Island. Des Barres chart of the harbor contains numerous key differences from an earlier chart of the area by Mark Tiddeman. This chart was made after a few drastic advances in marine surveying that allowed for safer navigation. The two illustrated landmarks shown were provided to help navigators set a particular course. Tiddemans chart was still being bought when Des Barres’s piece was published, but the aforementioned marine surveying advances allowed this map to gain prominence over Tiddeman’s chart.
