This ca. 1730 map of the African continent by Seutter displays thecentral and southern regions in mostly fictitious and erroneous detail. The Nile is shown originating considerably south of Zaire Lacus, and the Abyssinian province of Amhara is shown in the kingdom of Monomotapa. This map is based largely on Homann’s 1715 map; Seutter was apprenticed to Homann prior to establishing his own publishing business in the early 18th century. This piece is decorated with natives, pyramids, and exotic animals; the title is embellished by a fierce dragon.
