18th Century Russian Watercolor Painting

This is an original leaf from a Russian manuscript Lectionary in Church Slavonic. Full-page watercolor paintings, such as this, accompanied the text in the Lectionary- illustrating significant liturgical passages with scenes from the Life of Christ. This scene is painted in a particularly vivid and whimsical provincial manner. Lectionaries are selections of texts arranged for use in the liturgy. They sometimes refer to books such as Gospels that are accompanied by lists, illustrations or markings ordering them for liturgical use.
