This is an original leaf from a manuscript Book of Hours. The text consists of 20 lines of text, ruled in red, written, written in Latin in angular gothic book-hand script on animal vellum. Rubrics are in red, with line endings in red and blue, with liquid gold infill. There are three two-line initials in white and gray acanthus with floral infill on gold grounds. Elaborate panel borders in acanthus and floral motifs – including strawberries (symbol of perfect righteousness) on liquid gold ground.This leaf contains prayers for use during the Hours of the Virgin – Hour of Lauds.Book of Hours are personal prayer books of a devout and status-conscious society and are not only works of art, but cultural documents of the their time.
