13th Century Medieval Psalter Leaf

This is an original leaf from a medieval manuscript Psalter executed in France, ca. 1200-1225. It is written in Latin on animal vellum. 19 lines, written in small gothic bookhand with illuminated line endings of red, blue and gold. Both sides have bold ” bar borders with heavily burnished gold initials on burgundy & blue with white tracery. The bar borders are terminated by crosses on each end. Psalters were the principle books for private devotion before the emergence of the Book of Hours in the 13th century. Psalters contain all 150 psalms. They map also contain ancillary texts such as the Calendar, Canticles, Creeds, a Litany of the Saints, and prayers.
