Original leaf from a printed and hand-illuminated Renaissance prayer book, the Book of Hours. 34 lines of Latin text on animal vellum. One two-line and thirty-five one-line hand-illuminated initials in liquid gold on red or blue background. Elaborate borders hand-painted with tempera color in a floral motif with acanthus leaves and berries on liquid gold background. Printed by Germain Hardouyn and fully illuminated by hand in gold and colors in his workshop in Paris, c. 1534. In purpose and format, printed Books of Hours followed the older manuscript examples. The more luxurious were printed on vellum, as is this specimen.
