Original leaf from a late-medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 16 lines or red-ruled Latin text, with dark brown ink in Gothic textura script on animal vellum. Ten one-line initials and six line extenders in gold on blue and mauve ground with delicate white tracery.The one-line illuminated I” begins Psalm 7:9-18: “Iudica me?” (Judge me, O Lord, according to my justice, and according to my innocence?I will give glory to the Lord according to his justice: and will sing to the name of the Lord the most high).Book of Hours are personal prayer books of a devout and status-conscious society and are not only works of art, but also cultural documents of their time.
