This is a leaf from an important original printed and hand illuminated Book of Hours. The text is Latin, ruled in red and black on animal vellum. Initials, paragraph markers and endings were illuminated by hand in gold, on grounds of blue and/or magenta. Noted for its decorative borders – the paneled surrounds are historicated or inhabited. Printed by Thielma Kerver. From the ex collection of Baron Alexander Peckover von Wisbech. The full page miniature depicts John Boiled in Oil – a very popular illustration for the first Gospel Lesson (Emperor Domitian, left, directs the torment, while one torturer fans the flames – miraculously the evangelist survives the experience). The two-line I” begins John 1:1-13: “In principio?” (In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God?)In purpose and format, printed Books of Hours followed the older manuscript examples. The more luxurious were printed on vellum, as is this specimen.

Print Maker: Thielma Kerver (Paris, use of Rome)
