Original leaf from the late 15th century Gregorian chant. This musical sheet is fro a large Spanish Gradual. Executed by hand in manuscript calligraphy on animal parchment. Seven lines of text and musical notation are written in an angular Gothic hand in black ink on red 5-line Gregorian staves. Headings and rubrics are in red. Four large calligraphic knot-work initials – one with tow faces – one with an initial (probably the scribe’s).Graduals contain musical chants for the proper of the Mass: introits, graduals, tracts, alleluia, offertory and communion verses, and sequences for special feasts. They may also include chants for the ordinary of the Mass: Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Adnus Dei and for the introductory ‘asperges’ rite.
