Original leaf from a medieval manuscrip Book of Hours. 14 lines of text, written in Latin, on animal vellum. Ruled in red with dark brown ink, in fine gothic textura script, with rubrics ( headings) in red. One two-line initial, nine one-line initials and four line-extenderd in gold on red and blue ground with delicate white tracery. Panel border of vines wih berries in golf, blue, green and red. This Rinceaux border is a fine example from the workshop of the Boucicaut Master. This leaf came from Paris and is dated around 1415. The two-line gold D” begins Psalm 8 (complete): “Domine dominus… (O Lord our Lord, how admirable is thy name in the whole earth! For thy magnificence is elevated above the heavens…).Book of Hours are personal prayer books of a devout and status-conscious society and are not only works of art, but cultural documents of their time. They reveal a unique combination of sacred and secular imagery-made of the finest materials, by the best craftsmen, for a small audience, which could both appreciate and afford them.
