This is an original leaf from a manuscript Prayer Book. The text consists of 16 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin in gothic textura script on animal vellum. There is one illuminated two-line initial in red with internal floral motif surrounded by burnished gold and extending along the margins with trailing flowers, top and bottom, in red, blue and gold (distinctive 14th century style).The large illuminated initial G” begins a prayer: “Gratias ago tibi?” (I give thee thanks, Lord Jesus Christ?).Prayer Books are collections of prayers for private devotional use. Throughout the Middle Ages they supplemented the Psalter and Book of Hours.
