This is an original print from a Renaissance manuscript Psalter. The text consists of 20 lines written in Latin on animal vellum, ruled in red, with dark brown ink in fine gothic script. The large initials alternate in red and blue. The blue two-line M” begins Psalm 55 (complete): “Miserere?” (Have mercy on me, O God, for a man hath trodden me under foot?). The blue two-line “M” (verso) begins Psalm 56:2-4: Miserere?” (Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me: for my soul trusteth in thee. And in the shadow of thy wings will I hope, until iniquity pass away?).The devout were expected to engage in a series of devotions, structured around the reading of Psalms. In the Middle Ages all 150 psalms were to be recited each day, but as this proved impractical, the sequence was restructured to encompass a full week!”
