Original leaf from Flemish antiphonalon animal vellum. From the antiphonal of Marguerie De Bacovel; Completed for her by Lois de Villechecq, Vicar of the nunnery and a Carthusian monk. Provenance: Ex John Carter Brown Library.The manuscript text and music (seven lines ona four-line stave) were beautifully executed by hand in black ink with headings, rubrics and rulings in red. The large intriguing calligraphic initials include a humorous face and are colored with wash.The large calligraphic initial M” is from Psalm 110:4-5: “Miserator Dominus… ( The merciful Lord hath given food to them that fear him..) The large calligraphical initial “C” is from Psalm 115:14: “Calicem salutarius… ( I will take the chalice of salvation).
