Medieval Book of Hours

IL-2189: (150x100mm) Original text leaf from a late-medieval manuscript prayer book, the Book of Hours. 15 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown ink in a clear Gothic script on animal vellum. Some versal initials are heightened in yellow. The line extenders are in blue and burnished gold.The eleven one-line initials alternate in blue and burnished gold. They exhibit fine penwork tracery in red or blue that flamboyantly extend into the margins.The script is an unusually round, flowing gothic – perhaps due to the Italian and Spanish influences in the area where it was produced.Southern France: (Provence) Aix or Marseilles, c. 1460.
