James Montgomery Flagg was an American artist and illustrator. Flagg worked in media ranging from fine art painting, political cartooning, magazine illustrations, and United States military posters. He is best remembered for his political posters. This particular poster was a naval recruitment tool. The woman with the flag represents America, and the soldier in the front is prompting a young man Don’t Read American History – Make It!” and join the navy. Recruitment posters like this were flags specialty but this is one of the few that features more than one figure. “
