This 1620 nautical chart by Augustin Roussin shows North America and the Atlantic Ocean around what was New France. This map is a manuscript; it is incredibly rare, and there was only one ever made. The map is richly embellished with acorns and flowers. At the top, it shows a Native American with a bow. The Mare Del Norte, or the North Sea, is shown with a sea snake, an illustration that reflects the belief in demons and monsters that ran rampant during the time. A compass rose sits in the middle with a small illustration of a ship sailing underneath it.
