Saints John Miners. The Saints John Mine, which dates back to 1863, was the site of the first major silver strike in Colorado. This valley, formed by glaciers, once thrived, having a library, sawmill, mill, and smelter. But no saloons! The town was named after Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist. The townsite was partially destroyed in the late 1800s by an avalanche.
