This is a scarce Dutch map that examines the new world and what lay beyond. Though accurate to a good degree for South America, with reasonably accurate coastal contours and even a spindly Amazon River, the anomalies found throughout the rest of the map are typical speculations one looks for during this time. This map is framed to “Archival” standards.California is shown as a rather articulately drawn island, which floats of the western coast of America. Just above the isle of California appears to be a landmass which is suspected of connecting to Asia and is indeed labeled “Jesso” related to the islands north of Japan. Australia and New Zealand at this time are a disparate set of unconnected coastlines, which are only vaguely grasped. South of Patagonia and South America, we see a speculated stretch of coast, which is more related to a fabled continent of the South, than any depiction of Antarctica. This captures a fascinating moment in cartographic evolution as myths give way to historic new discoveries.
