This portrait, taken by Alexander Gardner on February 5, 1865, was captured so that portraitist Matthew Wilson could have reference pictures to paint Lincoln’s portrait. Since Lincoln had little time to spare, as this was taken during the final year of the Civil War, Gardner was tasked with photographing him. He wasn’t intending for the candid photograph to be last as art.
