This is a stunning map for the United States with fascinating borders for the transitioning US West. This is a rich steel engraving, with intricate details for topography, hydrography, as well as cities, towns, and major routes of the time. Both the Oregon and Santa Fe trails are articulated, though unspecified. Territorial boundaries are uniquely shown here with Nebraska’s panhandle extending to the continental divide, and above it an elongated Idaho territory stretches to the Missouri River. Just east of Oregon territory, we see an odd demarcation for a ‘shoshone” territory, covering most of the present day state of Idaho. Several other unique oddities appear, such as expanded territorial boundaries for Minnesota, Montana and Washington.
