FRAMED Ornamental Map of the United States & Mexico

This is a map almost indescribable for its drama. Not only does it capture an important and fascinating period in mapping of the US, but, more so it epitomizes the determination and jubilant pride of the fledgling nation. The map itself is full of notable qualities as it shows the republic of Texas, the expansive Oregon territory, a very large Indian Territory, as well as other very rare boundary configurations. Also most uncommon is a clearly noted Oregon trail, here shown as “Route of Oregon Emigrants”, which is outlined and distinctively hand colored. Surrounding the map are brief state and territorial histories, as well as a star and chain decorative border. Made during the Mexican-American war, this map addresses the conflict with historic vignettes of “The Halls of the Montezumas” as well as the “Great Temple Dedicated to the Sun”, but more so, large portraits of General Scott and General Taylor flank a sensational image of George Washington, crowning the map. But perhaps most telling of the timbre of the time can be seen in the large image centered below the map of “An American Exhibiting to the Sovereigns of Europe the Progress of His Country”. Here we see a proud American established before foreign aristocracy.
