Le Novveav Monde Descovvert Et Illvstre De Nostre Temps (NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA)

This is an extraordinarily rare and early depiction of America in a very different, essentially unique style that is different from but somewhat reminiscent of the Italian Lafreri school. It relies largely on the Mercator model of 1569, most noticeably with the bulge to the north-west coast of North America. The southern continent, Partie De La Antartiqve Incogneve, is full of depictions of natives hunting, fishing and socializing. The geography and nomenclature of North America are largely derived from other sources. Published c.1581 in Paris as part of a double folio, this particular map is the very scarce third state the first state was published in 1575. Made by Andre” Thevet, a Franciscan monk who traveled extensively in Europe and made a reputed short journey to South America. Upon his return he records that he sailed along the eastern coast of North America. The experiences he recalls of the New World have attracted much criticism from both his contemporaries and recent historians for their inaccuracy. However, one person seemed impressed, the King of France, Henry III, who bestowed upon him the honor of Royal Cosmographer.
