From Orteliuss 1570 atlas entitled Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. This illustrated map of Palenstine, dated 1557 later became a model for 17th century cartographers of the Holy Land. The thematic focus of this map is the area covered from the Nile Delta to the Phoenician coast, centered on the desert of the Exodus. Included is a compass – curiously the needle points southward. The two cartouches, are typical of contemporary Flemish decoration; their strap work and neoclassical figures enclose both title and description. While this maps greatest importance remains its historical representation of the Holy Land, one is also drawn into the rich coloring, detailed illustrations and the copperplate engraving colored by hand.
