This 1883 map by A.J. Johnson shows all of Asia; it shows India, the Philippines, the Chinese Empire, Russia, Japan, and parts of Arabia, Papua New Guinea and Europe. At this time, Japan is labeled as Nippon. The Chinese Empire spells Manchuria as “Manchooria” and Outer Mongolia. In the Middle East, there’s Persia, and beneath Turkey, Arabia. Korea isn’t labeled. This map names cities, islands, mountain ranges, railroad lines, deserts, bodies of water, and more. This series of maps are very unique in that they’re the latest we’ve seen by famed cartographer A.J. Johnson.
