The “Carte de la Caroline Méridionale et Septentrionale et de la Virginie” is a detailed French map from the late 18th century, created by geographers Edme Mentelle and Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire. Engraved by Pierre François Tardieu, this map was published around 1795–1799 as part of the Atlas Universel de Géographie Physique et Politique. The map encompasses a broad area, including the United States from Philadelphia northward along the Atlantic coast, covering the New England states including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and extending inland to parts of New York and the Hudson River Valley. The map illustrates rivers, mountains, and watersheds with fine detail while providing insight into the natural landscape of the region including numerous towns and villages. Roads are also shown, indicating the connectivity between various settlements.
This map was produced during a time of significant change and interest in North America. The United States had recently gained independence, and European powers were keenly interested in the political and geographic developments of the new nation.
