The Carte des Antilles by Edme Mentelle, published in 1798, presents a detailed geographical representation of the Caribbean islands during the late 18th century. It features the Antilles archipelago, including the Greater Antilles—such as Cuba, Hispaniola (modern-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Jamaica, and Puerto Rico—as well as the Lesser Antilles, stretching from the Virgin Islands down to Trinidad. The map reflects the political and colonial divisions of the time, indicating French, Spanish, British, and Dutch possessions with distinct labels and boundaries. Coastal features, harbors, and navigational routes are intricately drawn, providing valuable insights into maritime activity and colonial interests in the region during the period of European imperial expansion. The map’s creator, Edme Mentelle (1730–1815), was a renowned French geographer and historian who played a significant role in the development of modern geography in France. He was a professor at the École Normale and collaborated with cartographer Pierre-Gilles Chanlaire to produce educational and scientific maps during the Enlightenment. Mentelle’s work, including this map, is characterized by its blend of scholarly rigor and artistic craftsmanship, making it a valuable resource for both navigation and historical study. This map was the result of a collaboration between cartographers Pierre François Tardieu, Pierre Gregoire Chanlaire, and Edme Mentelle.
