The Carte de l’Isle de Cuba et des Isles Lucayes, published in 1798 by French geographer Edme Mentelle and engraved by Pierre François Tardieu, is a finely detailed and elegantly composed map depicting Cuba and the Lucayan Archipelago (modern-day Bahamas). Originally included in Mentelle’s influential Atlas Universel de Géographie Physique et Politique, this map reflects the geographical knowledge and colonial interests of the late 18th century. It presents the full length of Cuba with rich coastal detail and subtle topographical shading, alongside the full chain of the Lucayan Islands extending toward the Florida Straits. Portions of Hispaniola and Florida are also shown to provide regional context. The map’s creator, Edme Mentelle (1730–1815), was a renowned French geographer and historian who played a significant role in the development of modern geography in France. He was a professor at the École Normale and collaborated with cartographer Pierre-Gilles Chanlaire to produce educational and scientific maps during the Enlightenment. Mentelle’s work, including this map, is characterized by its blend of scholarly rigor and artistic craftsmanship, making it a valuable resource for both navigation and historical study. This map was the result of a collaboration between cartographers Pierre François Tardieu, Pierre Gregoire Chanlaire, and Edme Mentelle.
