Colton’s United States of America,1861

This map is a fine example of the highly sought-after edition of Colton’s map of the United States, published in the rare 1861 issue of Colton’s Atlas. This is the only American atlas known to feature “Colona,” the provisional name briefly used for what would become Colorado Territory. These maps that show Colona are extremely hard to find. The name “Colona” appears in editions from around 1859 to 1861, reflecting the evolving name before “Colorado” became the official designation in 1861. Other important features – Arizona is shown south of New Mexico; Nevada isn’t there yet so Utah is very large. Also, Nebraska territory extends up to the Canada border and Kansas, named “Kanzas” includes the current state of Colorado. Also, Washington wraps around the side of Oregon. Several notable exploration and mail routes are marked, including Fremont’s, Kearny’s, and early U.S. mail routes. It also features detailed notes on Conde & Bartlett’s line, drawn prior to the Gadsden Purchase.
