This map by Petrus Schenck (or Pieter Schenk the Elder), a prominent Dutch cartographer and engraver of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The title translates from Latin as “The Theater of the War on the Rhine”, referring to military campaigns along the Rhine River—particularly during the War of the Grand Alliance (1688–1697) or possibly the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), both of which saw significant action in the Rhineland. In the title, it mentions Daniël Wolf baron van Dopf, who was a Dutch officer and nobleman. The loose translation of the map title is “The Theater of the War on the Rhine, under the fortunate auspices of the most valiant and most illustrious Daniel Wolf van Dopff, of Art and Aigimont, General of the Dutch Army. Published and dedicated to His Imperial Majesty and the States of the United Netherlands, etc., etc., in hope and prayer for the successful conduct of affairs, most devotedly by the illustrious Petrus Schenk.”
