This very rare map of West Neck Park, Shelter Island is an important piece of history to the development of Suffolk County, Long Island. Before 1870, Long Island was a land of farmers and mariners. It was at this point in history, that developers started to plan waterfront homes for the desire of summer visitors. These plans were created by John L. Nostrand, in 1888, a civil engineer who worked as a city surveyor in Brooklyn. In 1888 Mr. Nostrand filed a development map for 230 Villas in an area he called West Neck Park with the Clerk of Suffolk County. Nostrands developments became the next major development after the Methodists came to the Heights in 1872 and the Bostonians to Manhansett in 1873. As stated on this map (in the top right hand corner), “This Map is one of a proposed series of Four Maps to be made by the present owner of this beautiful property, known as West Neck Park, comprising from 700 to 800 plots of about one acre each, with seven miles of water front, and from 10 to 12 miles of roads and avenues, together with beautiful parks, lakes and bays, by which it is almost surrounded.” On this map you will see the plans for Rocky Point Avenue and Nostrand Parkway and the Stearns estate (now Camp Quinipet). It also includes a small map of Suffolk County (on the bottom left hand corner) as a guide to West Neck Park. Mr. Nostrand sold portions of the mapped subdivision, and after his death in 1900 his interest in the remaining lots at West Neck Park were inherited by his son and daughter, Peter Elbert Nostrand and Ann Nostrand Debevoise. They have since sold off various lots to others, as did their children.
