In the face of protecting and managing an expansive nation, the Military was decentralized and organized in departments to cover the enormous territories of the time. This map colorfully illustrates the seven large military departments that existed just prior to the Civil War. Most notably it shows us the many military outposts scattered through out the country. Several of these forts are long since lost, such as Ft. Massachusetts and Ft. Garland in Colorado. A colorful map of the country with good detail for what was known of the nations terrain at the time. Some sporadic foxing. Backed with Japanese tissue for support
