This map titled “Nouveaux Mappemonde ou Globe Terrestre avec des Tables et des Remarques pour Conduire à la Connoissance de la Géographie et de l’Histoire” was created by Henri Abraham Chatelain in the early 18th century and published as part of his comprehensive “Atlas Historique.” It features two large hemispheres showing the world as it was known at the time—the Americas in the Western Hemisphere, with some geographic uncertainties like the northwest coast, and Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania in the Eastern Hemisphere. Published almost 50 years befor Captain Cook’s first circumnavigation, it shows Australia and New Zealand with only partial outlines. Beyond its geographic detail, the map is notable for the numerous tables and textual notes that surround the hemispheres. These provide explanations on world divisions, historical events, major religions, and the routes of famous explorers such as Magellan and Columbus. Rather than simply a navigational chart, Chatelain designed this map as an educational tool, embodying Enlightenment ideals of sharing knowledge. The United States is shown mostly uncharted, with partial outlines – yet some areas along the California coast are depicted.
