The map titled “Partie de l’Amérique septentrionale, qui comprend le cours de l’Ohio, la Nlle. Angleterre, la Nlle York, le New Jersey, la Pensylvanie, le Maryland, la Virginie, la Caroline”, was created by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, one of the foremost French cartographers of the 18th century. Published around 1755, it offers a detailed French perspective on the eastern regions of North America, with a particular focus on the British colonies and the Ohio River Valley—an area of significant geopolitical interest at the time. This map captures the rising tensions between France and Britain over territorial claims in the Ohio Valley, a key flashpoint that contributed to the outbreak of the French and Indian War (1754–1763), the North American theater of the larger Seven Years’ War. It depicts the British colonies of New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas, and features rivers, forts, Indigenous lands, and patterns of European settlement. Vaugondy relied on a mix of French military reports, earlier maps, and Indigenous sources to compile the map, making it both a tool for navigation and a visual assertion of French territorial ambitions.  An inset provides additional detail on the Carolinas, and the map stands out for its thorough representation of Native American tribes. Today, it remains an important historical document from a time of intense colonial rivalry in North America.
