This is a U.S Geological Survey of the Nicolaus quadrangle in California. Made in 1908. The pacific railroad, creeks, rivers, county lines, and topographical features are noted. The town of New Helvetia is clearly shown. In 1839, the Swiss pioneer John Sutter arrived in Alta California.He established a fort and named the town “Nueva Helvetia” or New Switzerland. The site of “Nueva Helvetia” is just a few miles east of where his son, John Sutter, Jr., established Sacramento, and is on the eastern edge of present day downtown Sacramento.
