This pictorial map is one of the best of its kind! The 1938 Richardson Rome map of Rocky Mountain National Park is a colorful and whimsical pictorial map that blends geographic accuracy with artistic charm. Created by Denver-based artist-cartographer Richardson Rome, it features vivid greens, browns, and blues to depict the park’s forests, peaks, and lakes. Pictorial relief gives a three-dimensional feel to landmarks like Longs Peak, Bear Lake, and the Never Summer Range, while scenic vignettes of Dream Lake and Grand Lake add visual interest.
The map covers the park from Estes Park to Grand Lake, highlighting features such as the Continental Divide and Trail Ridge Road, along with roads and trails marked for driving, horseback, and hiking. Icons show the locations of lodges, campsites, and cabins, and whimsical illustrations—like a water droplet symbolizing the Colorado River headwaters—infuse personality into the geography. Wildlife such as elk and mountain sheep are also depicted throughout the map. A compass rose and detailed legend help orient viewers, while a humorous disclaimer reads: “If lost for more than thirty days—ask a native; cartographer not responsible.” This map has a pen mark that leads to McGraw Ranch – and on the back of the map the owner of the map wrote “Obtained when I worked at the McGraw Dude Ranch in Estes Park, Colo. 1938, L.I. Dolan, Jr.
