The Virginiae Partis Australis, et Floridae Partis Orientalis, Interjacentiumque Regionum Nova Descriptio is a significant 17th-century map by Dutch cartographer Jan Jansson, first published around 1639. It offers a detailed depiction of the southeastern coast of North America, encompassing present-day Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and northern Florida.

Building upon earlier works, Jansson’s map incorporates advancements from Hessel Gerritsz’s 1631 charts, providing a more accurate depiction of coastal features such as the Outer Banks and the Chesapeake Bay. While coastal areas are rendered with improved precision, the interior regions still reflect speculative geography, including the depiction of large, mythical inland lakes, a common feature in maps of that era.

The map vividly illustrates the competing colonial claims of European powers. It features the royal arms of England over Virginia and the fleur-de-lis of France over Florida, symbolizing the territorial ambitions of these nations. Notably, the map references the short-lived French colony of Fort Caroline, established in 1564 and destroyed by Spanish forces in 1565. These elements underscore the geopolitical tensions and conflicts among European powers vying for control in the New World.

In line with the Dutch cartographic tradition of the Golden Age, the map is richly decorated. It features an elaborate cartouche flanked by Native American figures, compass roses, sailing ships, and sea creatures. These artistic embellishments not only enhance the visual appeal but also reflect the European fascination with the New World and its inhabitants.

This map was included in various editions of Jansson’s atlases, such as the Novus Atlas. Its detailed depiction of the southeastern coast influenced subsequent cartographers and remained a reference point for decades. The map’s enduring appeal lies in its combination of geographical detail, historical context, and artistic craftsmanship.
