In 1886, General Clinton sailed from Boston to meet with a British fleet under Commodore Sir Peter Parkerand Lord Cornwallis. The Americans caught wind of the British’s plans and constructed a fort in preparation for Clinton’s attacks. Eventually, Clinton withdrew, his expedition a failure. This map shows Sullivan Island, a bridge of boats, a rebel’s camp, parts of Green Island and Long Island, the encampment of the British Army, and the names of the ships that attacked the fort. The fort was incomplete when Clinton arrived, but it was effective in deterring his attacks.
