This 1777 William Faden map shows the Battle of New York. The map shows General Howe’s New York campaign, the British victory in the Battle of Long Island, and the pursuit of American forces to Fort Washington by the British. The map was published in record time, just a few months after these events occurred; it shows all activity from Oct. and Nov. 1776. The American army, just defeated on Manhattan Island in Sept. 1776, was retreating to Westchester when the British began their attacks. The British used the same strategies that were successful in the Battle of Long Island in an attempt capture the Bronx and Westchester. The British troops are shown in Larchmont, New Rochelle, Pelham Manor, and the Bronx. Other significant military action shown is Cornwallis’ capture of Fort Lee and Washington’s army being pursued across the Delaware River.
