This breathtaking 1902 map by the Boston and Maine Railroad shows the Summit of Mt. Washington and the White mountains in New Hampshire and Maine. This map was made at a time when these mountains were only reachable by rail. A popular vacation destination, the mountains were sprawling with new hotels and restaurants. In center, the map shows the Mt. Washington R.R. train, the Summit House, the Engine House, the Car House, the Office of Among the Clouds, and the Tip Top House. Circling the Summit House, the map goes on to show up to 189 locations of villages, mountains, and peaks. The Boston and Maine Railroad continued to hold dominance on rail travel to and from this location for about a century.
