This nautical chart by Aaron Arrowsmith, in 1798, details routes and dates of explorations of the Pacific Ocean. It shows North and South America on the east and Asia on the west. Australia is labeled as New Holland.” Numerous Pacific islands and cities are identified. Southern Mexico is called “New Spain.” Hawaii is called the “Sandwich Islands,” as they were titled by James Cook in 1778. The map also documents the indigenous Koryaks on the land north of Japan and west of Russia. The islands between present-day Alaska and Russia are called the “Aleootskia Islands.” Some notes are shown. A fascinating piece documenting what was still a vastly unexplored part of the world in 1798. “
