This interesting William Mitchell map of Nantucket shows the location as it was in 1838. The map identifies residences, roads, windmills, lighthouses, ponds, burial grounds, the marine observatory, and more. The split near Further Creek, Narrow Creek, and Broad Creek, by Tuckernuck Island, no longer exists. William Mitchell learned astronomy by studying the stars through a clockmaker’s telescope. He often recorded his astronomical observations and was known to aid sailors in navigating by the stars.
