1865 map of Battle of the Wilderness on May 5-6, 1864.The map shows General George Meade as Union commander, when in fact he was subordinate to General U.S. Grant. This was the first head to head meeting between Grant and Robert E. Lee, as Grant was headed for Richmond and Lee moved to cut him off. They fought to a stalemate here, but Grant then moved onward to Spotsylvania two days later.
