This 1776 coastal chart by J.F.W. Des Barres shows the Frenchman’s Bay and Mount Desart River areas in Hancock County, Maine. Some topographic information for the area is shown. Relief is given by hachures. The names of various islands, harbors, and channels are also provided. This map originally appeared in Des Barre’s Atlantic Neptune, which featured Newfoundland to New York. This survey overwhelmed him; of it, he wrote, There is scarcely any known shore so much intersected with Bays, Harbours, and Creeks as this is,” and, “…the Offing of it is so full of Islands, Rocks, and Shoals as are almost innumerable.””
