This map of Nantucket Harbor, by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, was completed in 1889. It provides detailed information of area bottoms, shoals, soundings, buoys, wreck locations, lighthouses, rocks, tides, elevations, and more. The map also shows railroad lines and neighborhood grids. Previously called the United States Survey of Coast, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was created on February 10, 1807. It was the United State’s government’s first scientific agency. Jefferson founded it in an effort to map out America’s waters and make navigation safer.
