This map by Peter Goos illustrates Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras. Most of these city names have theirs roots in Dutch and Algonquian languages, such as Zwaanendael/Swaanendael, Navesink/Nevesincks, and Barendegat. These names mostly refer to channels, rivers, and streams in the area. Staten Island, Manhattan Island and Virginia are clearly identified. Pieter Goos, son of cartographer Abraham Goos, published numerous nautical charts along famed cartographers Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius in Antwerp.
